Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.
An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.
The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
Together is streaming on Hulu now.
