Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
